How to Build a Sales Funnel for Free (7 Steps)
You can build a working sales funnel for free in 2026 by using systeme.io, an all-in-one funnel builder whose free plan includes 3 funnels, 15 funnel steps, 2,000 contacts, and unlimited email sends, with no credit card required. That is enough to run a complete squeeze page, thank-you page, and welcome email sequence without paying anything.
We run our own funnels on systeme.io, so the steps below follow the same screens and settings we use. The only optional cost in this whole guide is a custom domain (roughly $10 a year at a registrar), and you can skip even that by using the free systeme.io subdomain.
Plan for about an afternoon of focused work. Steps 1 and 2 take minutes. Steps 3 and 4 are where the real building happens.
- Total cost
- $0 (custom domain optional, about $10/yr)

- 3 funnels, 15 steps total

Step 1: Map your offer and audience before you open any software
A funnel is a sequence: a visitor trades an email address for something useful, then a short email series builds trust and points to a paid offer. Before you build pages, write down three things:
- Who it is for. One specific audience, described in one sentence. "Freelance designers who want retainer clients" beats "creatives."
- The free thing (lead magnet). Something small that solves one narrow problem in under 15 minutes: a checklist, a template, a swipe file, or a 5-day email mini-course. An email mini-course is the cheapest to produce because the emails are the product.
- The paid thing. Even if it does not exist yet, name what you will eventually sell (a digital product, a service, an affiliate offer). Every email in the funnel should make sense as a step toward it.
Then write the one-sentence promise of the lead magnet, for example: "A 10-point pre-launch checklist that catches the mistakes that kill course launches." That sentence becomes the headline of your squeeze page in step 3. If you cannot write it plainly, the offer is not clear enough yet, and no page builder will fix that.
Step 2: Create a free systeme.io account
Create your free account at systeme.io. The free plan is a permanent tier, not a trial, and signup does not ask for a card. Here is what it includes as of July 2026, per systeme.io's published plan pages:
| Free plan item | Limit |
|---|---|
| Contacts | 2,000 |
| Email sends | Unlimited |
| Sales funnels | 3 (15 funnel steps total) |
| Email campaigns | 1 |
| Automation rules | 1 |
| Workflows | 1 |
| Tags | 1 |
| A/B tests | 1 |
| Custom domain | 1 |
| Online course | 1 (up to 500 students) |
| Transaction fees on sales | 0% (via Stripe or PayPal) |
The limits that matter for this guide are the single email campaign and single automation rule. That is exactly enough for one lead magnet funnel with one welcome sequence, so we will spend both carefully in step 4. After signup, take five minutes in Settings to set your sender name, sender email address, and your mailing address (required in email footers by anti-spam law).
Step 3: Build the squeeze page
In the dashboard, go to Funnels, click Create, name it after your lead magnet, and choose the audience-building goal. Systeme.io generates a two-step funnel: a squeeze page and a thank-you page, which uses 2 of your 15 free steps.
Pick a simple template, then strip it down. A squeeze page that converts usually has five elements and nothing else:
- A headline that states the promise you wrote in step 1
- One or two lines under it saying who it is for and what they get
- A form asking for email only (every extra field lowers signups)
- One button with a specific label ("Send me the checklist", not "Submit")
- A line about what happens next ("Check your inbox, it arrives in about a minute")
Delete testimonial blocks, feature grids, and anything you would have to invent content for. A short honest page beats a long padded one. Before saving, use the mobile preview: most of your free traffic in step 6 will arrive from phones, and buttons or images that overflow on mobile are the most common self-inflicted wound we see.
Step 4: Wire the thank-you page and the email sequence
Edit the thank-you page next. Its job is to confirm the signup and set up the emails: "You're in. The checklist is on its way to your inbox. It comes from [your sender name], so add that address to your contacts." If your lead magnet is a file, you can also link it directly on this page; systeme.io's free plan includes file storage, so upload the PDF and link the button to it.
Then build the email side:
- Go to Emails, create your one campaign, and name it "Welcome sequence."
- Email 1 (sent immediately): deliver the lead magnet link and nothing else.
- Emails 2 to 5 (one every 1 to 2 days): one useful idea per email that helps the reader act on the lead magnet, with a soft pointer to your paid thing in the last one or two.
- Go to Automations and create your one automation rule: trigger "contact subscribes via the funnel's form", action "subscribe to campaign: Welcome sequence."
That single rule is the wiring that makes the funnel run itself. Finish by testing end to end with your own email address: fill the form, check the redirect, and confirm email 1 actually lands (check spam too).
Step 5: Connect a domain, or use the free subdomain
You have two options, and only one of them costs money.
Free option: every systeme.io page gets a systeme.io subdomain URL out of the box. It works, it has SSL, and for testing an offer it is fine. If your goal is to validate an idea this week, ship on the subdomain and move on to step 6.
Custom domain (about $10 a year): the free plan includes 1 custom domain connection. Buy a domain at any registrar, then in systeme.io go to Settings, then Custom domains, add the domain, and create the CNAME record the setup screen shows you at your registrar. Propagation usually completes within a few hours. Then open your funnel settings and assign the domain so your squeeze page lives at your own URL.
A custom domain looks more credible in social bios and makes your links portable if you ever change tools, so we recommend it once the funnel has shown any sign of life. It is the only line item in this guide that is not free.
Step 6: Drive your first traffic without an ad budget
A funnel with no visitors is just a website. With no ad budget, your traffic comes from showing up where your audience already gathers:
- Put the link in every bio you own. X, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, GitHub, forum signatures. Use the lead magnet promise as the bio line, not "check out my link."
- Answer real questions. Find the subreddits, Discord servers, Facebook groups, and forums where your audience asks questions. Give complete, useful answers. Most communities ban link drops, so let your profile carry the link and mention the lead magnet only when it directly answers the question.
- Publish the lead magnet in pieces. Each checklist item or template section can become a standalone post that ends with "the full version is free at [link]."
- Trade audiences. If you know anyone with a small newsletter or podcast in the niche, offer a swap: you mention them, they mention you.
Set a modest first target, such as 100 subscribers. That is enough data to make step 7 meaningful, and it is a realistic outcome of a few weeks of consistent posting, not a few days.
Step 7: Read the numbers and iterate
Systeme.io's funnel dashboard shows visits and opt-in rate for each step, and the campaign stats show open and click rates per email. Check them weekly, not hourly, and change one thing at a time:
- Low opt-in rate on decent traffic: the promise or headline is the suspect. This is the right place to spend your one free A/B test: same page, two headlines, let it run until the difference is clear.
- Good opt-in rate but tiny traffic: the page is fine, the problem is step 6. Double down on whichever channel produced the subscribers you do have.
- Signups but weak email opens: test a different subject line on email 1 and confirm your sender details are set correctly from step 2.
When the funnel works, the free plan's ceilings tell you exactly when to pay: you will outgrow it at 2,000 contacts, or sooner if you need more than one campaign and one automation rule. Systeme.io's Startup plan is $17 a month for 5,000 contacts and higher limits, and by the time that upgrade is necessary, the funnel should be paying for it. Until then, everything above runs on $0.
Frequently asked questions
Is systeme.io really free forever?
Yes. The free plan is a permanent tier, not a trial, and no credit card is required. It includes 2,000 contacts, 3 funnels with 15 total steps, and unlimited email sends. You only pay if you outgrow those limits.
Can I sell products on the systeme.io free plan?
Yes. The free plan supports payments through Stripe and PayPal with 0% platform transaction fees, and includes a digital store with up to 3 products plus 1 online course for up to 500 students.
What are the biggest limits of a free sales funnel?
On systeme.io's free plan the tightest limits are 1 email campaign, 1 automation rule, 1 workflow, and 1 tag. That covers one lead magnet funnel with one welcome sequence, but not multiple segmented sequences.
Do I need a custom domain to build a sales funnel for free?
No. Every page gets a free systeme.io subdomain with SSL, which is fine for validating an offer. The free plan also includes 1 custom domain connection, but the domain itself costs about $10 a year at a registrar.
When should I upgrade from the free plan?
When you approach 2,000 contacts or need more than one email campaign or automation rule. The Startup plan is $17 a month for 5,000 contacts and higher limits, and a working funnel should cover that cost.
